Matter Labs is a blockchain Infrastructure platform focused on expanding Ethereum with zero-knowledge technology. This solution is renowned as the platform behind zKSync, an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution designed to speed up transactions and cut gas fees while maintaining network security. zkSync Era(zkEVM) and the ZK Stack are two of its flagship products that support this strategy and advance Ethereum scalability. The platform builds zk-rollup-based infrastructure that enables off-chain transactions while maintaining Ethereum-level security using cryptographic proofs. Key Features of Matter Labs: • The Elastic Network connects multiple zk-powered chains, making cross-chain interaction smooth and enabling shared liquidity. • zkSync inherits Ethereum’s security model, ensuring trustless withdrawals and on-chain data availability. • The ZK Stack is an open toolkit to build custom zk-rollups, Layer 3 chains, and scalable blockchain applications. • Very low transaction fees with high performance, reaching up to 15,000+ TPS. • zkSync Era is fully EVM-compatible, so Ethereum smart contracts can run with minimal changes, helping DeFi, NFT, and Web3 apps scale easily. Matter Labs Milestones: Year Key Achievements 2018 Matter Labs was created by two founders, Alex Gluchowski and Alex Vlasov, focusing on scaling Ethereum through the use of zero-knowledge proofs. 2019 This firm raised $2M in a Seed Round funding from Placeholder. Also, it won an Ethereum Foundation grant for research related to ZK protocols. 2020 The first version of zkSync was activated on the Ethereum mainnet, being named “zkSync Lite.” It was optimized for payments and cheap token transfers. 2021 Matter Labs conducted fundraising rounds worth $6M (Series A) and $50M (Series B), both backed by a16z Ventures. At that time, zkSync 2.0 was presented as the first-ever EVM-compatible ZK-Rollup solution. 2022 The company raised $200M in its Series C Round. zkSync 2.0 "Baby Alpha" became active on the mainnet with the purpose of testing and validation. 2023 zkSync 2.0 was relaunched under the new name zkSync Era. It has become publicly available, and the first-ever implemented ZK-EVM. 2024 The concept of the “ZK Nation” governance was introduced by Matter Labs. The process of launching the ZK tokens airdrop took place. 2025 The project moved onto the "Elastic Network" architecture (ZkSync v24+), providing trustless interoperability between multiple ZK-Chains.
